Eskrigg Reserve, Lockerbie

Eskrigg Reserve is on the site of an old curling pond. It occupies seven acres and contains a mixture of habitats including mixed woodland, grassland, heathland, willow carr, sedge bed, reed bed, stream and pond each with its own associated flora and fauna. There is coniferous woodland to the north and west with a rich deciduous understory, permanent grassland to the east and marshland to the south.

  • Notable animal species: Red Squirrel, Willow Tit, Little Grebe and Tawny Owl.
  • Rare plants: Adder’s Tongue Fern.

Eskrigg rewards visits at all times of the year.

How to get there:

By car:

follow the A709 from Lockerbie towards Dumfries.  Park at Dryfesdale Cemetery car park, 1.1 miles (1.8km) west of Lockerbie town centre.

By bus service:

381/81 Dumfries to Lockerbie, disembark at Dryfesdale Lodge Visitors’ Centre.

By cycle / on foot:

Sustrans route 74 passes through Lockerbie.  Eskrigg Reserve is a short walk: cross the A709 at Dryfesdale Lodge Visitors’ Centre and follow the forest road south for quarter of a mile (400m) and the Reserve is signposted.

Vehicle access is possible by prior arrangement.

 

Facilities:

A hardcore path runs through the reserve offering views of most habitats and with interpretation boards at regular intervals.

  • A picnic area with tables and a shelter.
  • One small bird-watching hide (without wheelchair access) at the end of a boardwalk, overlooking the pond.
  • One medium-sized red squirrel/bird-watching hide (with wheelchair access) with views over the pond and wildlife feeding areas.
  • Eskrigg Centre – a large, high-quality hide/visitor centre with interpretation and teaching/research facilities and wheelchair access.
  • A camping toilet can be made available by arrangement.
  • School group visits and guided tours can be arranged
