Badgers in Dumfries and Galloway

Badger

Our largest carnivore, a big weasel, wider spread than people think, with setts on the coast and into the hills. Weighing up to 18kg, the badgers diet is varied, eating slugs, beetles, nuts, fruits to rodents, worms are the staple food.

A badger clan’s exclusive territory, never overlaps with neighbouring clans; Boundary latrines prevent cross boundary disputes.

Clans of six or eight adults with up to four cubs per breeding female are known. Badgers are heavily protected and disturbance at setts is against the law. WWT Caerlaverock has a badger watch, check for details and booking in the events section or the countryside events booklet.
