Black Grouse in Dumfries and Galloway

Black Grouse

Also known as the Blackcock with his partner the Grey Hen, are found in our uplands, feeding and breeding on localised woodland edge habitat. Strong and fast on the wing, this grouse is declining. The males lyre shaped tail is very distinctive.

Famous for breeding displays at ‘lek’ site’s, where the top grouse holds the central position and females face amorous males on the way to the ‘lek’s’ centre.

To see blackcock, be up early to find a ‘lek’ site first, your hearing may guide you, the bubbling calls drift well, plus a good hide and getting and into place before dawn. Forestry Commission has a viewing place in Carrick but check with the F.C. Rangers.
