Common Porpoise & Common Dolphins in Dumfries and Galloway

DolphinsCommon porpoises (also known as harbour porpoises) are one of the smallest marine mammals, and have a shorter, less distinct dorsal fin than bottlenose or common dolphins. They tend not to jump clear of the water, and a typical view is of a rolling back and fin just breaking the waves. They feed on herrings and sprats, and a good time to look out for them is when you can see large gatherings of seabirds on and above the surface of the sea – they are after the same food!

Common porpoises are best viewed from the west coast of Dumfries and Galloway throughout the year, and groups of up to 30 or more are often seen from the Mull of Galloway in autumn and winter.
