Kingfishers in Dumfries and Galloway

KingfisherA spectacular, small wetland bird which can be seen at rivers and streams all across the region. Most often seen as a bright blue flash flying low over a river, both male and female are bright blue over the back with an orange breast. They have a large head and black bill, the female has an orange lower mandible. As the name suggests they dive from a low branch into water to catch small fish, mainly minnows and sticklebacks. They nest in burrows in sandy river banks.
